Strong Metal riffs drenched in Hard Rocking power but softened by subtle keyboards, infectious melody and feminine charm.

Hot on the heels of Delain's successful UK tour* comes the intriguingly titled 'Lunar Prelude' EP. I say EP, but with a running time of around thirty-seven minutes, it's longer than your average Rush or Van Halen album! It contains eight tracks – four studio and four live. The studio treats consist of two completely new tracks, 'Suckerpunch' and 'Turn The Lights Out', a re-worked version of 'Don't Let Go' (which appeared on the bonus disc of the 2014's 'The Human Contradiction') and an orchestral interpretation of 'Suckerpunch' which begins pleasantly and gradually works up a Pirates Of The Caribbean-esque swirl to close out the release in grand style.

'Suckerpunch' (check out the new video) is notable for its synth intro – though the melodic, heavy and choral elements you associate with Delain are all in place and the fundamentals of their sound intact. It's a worthy lead track and an interesting single.

'Turn The Lights Out' was unveiled on the UK tour (the Bristol gig reviewed by this very publication last issue*). It's notable for its striking orchestration, and an almost dance-like beat that borders on Electronica before its easy chorus and powerful Symph-Rock instrumental section return us to more familiar ground. 'Don't Let Go' has a very evident boppy and Poppy eighties synth presence but incredibly still manages to hint at the dark side and still manages to Rock!

The four live recordings are all feature powerful renditions of tracks drawn from '...Contradiction' album – 'Lullaby', 'Stardust', 'Here Come The Vultures' and 'Army Of Dolls' – and all were recorded on tour in 2015. The crowd noise is left high in the mix, adding to the energy captured here and helping to demonstrate what an exciting live proposition Delain have become.

Existing fans will enjoy what's here enormously and find it will whet their appetite for the forthcoming album*. Those not yet familiar with the band who like strong Metal riffs drenched in Hard Rocking power but softened by subtle keyboards, infectious melody and feminine charm could do far worse than check out 'Lunar Prelude'. There's something of the moon about it.
