Night Ranger - Golden Nugget Casino, Las Vegas (USA) - 30 September 2016

Night Ranger are one of the few bands you can guarantee a first class performance from in every show. Their infectious sense of fun on stage and timeless Rock classics have made them one of the most respected eighties Melodic Rock bands around today.

The theatre, set in the iconic Golden Nugget Casino, is a seated venue with a large stage and good acoustics. With no support act, the band hit the stage with the hard hitting 'Touch Of Madness', with both guitarists Brad Gillis and Keri Kelli running all over the stage pulling Rock shapes (though Kerri's Gothic stage clothes still make him look like he is on loan from Alice Cooper). The hits just keep coming as 'Four In The Morning', 'Sing Me Away' and 'When You Close Your Eyes' all see an airing. Singer and bass player Jack Blades is a whirlwind of energy and laughter; he looks like he is where he loves to be... on stage.

An acoustic 'Goodbye' has drummer and singer Kelly Keagy coming out stage front to offer his own distinctive voice to proceedings. This man is a truly talented singer, drummer and song-writer, showing tonight he is in a league of his own. Adding 'High Enough' and 'Coming Of Age' from Jack Blades' stint with Damn Yankees works splendidly, with the audience enthusiastically joining in. That said, the covers of 'School's Out', 'Crazy Train' and 'Boys Of Summer' were selections I could do without. The band play them well but I would prefer they dip deeper into their own catalogue. Either way, the songs do go down very well tonight.

That's not to say there were no deep cuts on offer tonight. Two of my favourites, 'Rumours In The Air' and a hard hitting 'NightRanger', were dusted off. It was also good to hear 'High Road' from the bands' recent release, and I would have liked to have heard more, as it is one of their best in years.

The classic 'Don't Tell Me You Love Me' effortlessly morphs into Deep Purple's 'Highway Star', before they finish with the inevitable smash hits 'Sister Christian' and 'You Can Still Rock In America'. A very appropriate title for how I was feeling by the end of this superb show.
