Divided Multitude may well have made the most impressive Prog Metal album since the halcyon days of Dream Theater's 'Images And Words'.

I am ashamed to admit that Divided Multitude are a band who have never crossed my path before. Considering they have now entered their twentieth year that is quite some admission. At least I could comfort myself that past experience would not influence my view.

Despite the promising, pummelling, Metallica-like opening to 'Immortal', the early signs were worrying with the hoarse, growly vocals bringing to mind those awful Emo type bands that inhabit Kerrang! these days. Yet by the time the chorus kicked in, the melody-soaked harmonies and impressive vocals of Sindre Antonsen provided such a counter point, that it all began to make sense.

Antonsen possesses an impressive set of pipes, showing hints of Geoff Tate, but with a little more grit. Covering many bases, there's enough here to please fans of Prog Metal, with 'Closure' mixing hard-hitting riffs with ethereal keyboards, while drummer Anders Vinger provides enough fills for the Mike Portnoy fanboys to salivate over. Melodic Metal lovers will delight in 'Only For You', with its huge, harmony-soaked chorus topped by a simple, yet beautiful guitar refrain from Christer Harøy. DM work so well together, with keyboards and guitars really complimenting each other without dominating or overwhelming the songs.

One area where the band stand out against run-of-the-mill Proggers is the strength of the backing vocals; these certainly do come to the fore and build up just at the right time. The aforementioned 'Only...' is a prime example, but 'Too Many Tears' also builds up the layers of harmonies as each chorus gets bigger and more grandiose, while it's opening jackhammer riff would make Rammstein proud; these two songs might well be viewed as classics in the future. 'Proud', a dark, moody, atmospheric masterpiece (featuring Antonsen duetting with Shadow Gallery's Brian Ashland) is quite stunning with a gorgeous acoustic-backed chorus. 'Seal Of Faith', the album's big epic, is a real slow burner which goes through a myriad of changes across its nigh on ten minute length, building up to a searing climax.

It's taken twenty years for DM to finally find its way into my orbit, and one thing's for sure, itt won't take as long to back track and catch up on what's been missed. Divided Multitude may well have made the most impressive Prog Metal album since the halcyon days of Dream Theater's 'Images And Words'.
