It's fair to say Warrior Soul were not as heavy as most of the bands at Titanfest, but it did not stop them going down a storm or getting a decent crowd on the second stage. They opt to adjust their set to allow for the heavier tastes of the crowd and pitch it just about right for their audience.

A riot of high jumps and blonde curls, Kory Clarke's voice sounds better live than on record and even though he has chosen a death growl progressively more often as a vocal technique, if you listen carefully the old tones of Clarke's voice can still be heard. Throwing the bird at the crowd, he understands very well the energy tonight requires to get an audience going and it is not long before the crowd is moshing to the extent that they get beer all over the electronics at the front of the stage, which miraculously carry on working. Clarke gestures in passion and the crowd respond in kind.

By 'Punk And Belligerent', we are treated to a ridiculously good, blistering Rock 'n' Roll guitar solo and Clarke is making championship gestures left and right. With another strong guitar into on 'Jump For Joy', the crowd are completely engaged by the direct and passionate delivery. During another crowd favourite, 'Wasteland', Clarke inserts "Goddam Trump can go to hell" and no one blinks an eye. One over-enthusiastic member of the crowd steals the set-list mid-set and Clarke threatens to knee him in the chest and punch his head, but he is obviously just kidding and simply carries on, straining his eyes to see his band-mate's copy.

During 'Payback Is A Bitch', Clarke forces his drummer to speed the track up and then raises his hands in recognition of the sterling guitar performance next to him. By 'Love Destruction', two strangers in the crowd are pogoing together in unison, arms around each other with enough wild abandon to clear the floor around their not insignificant frames. A few members of the crowd at the front try to pull Clarke into the pit, but despite their concerted effort... he stands his ground and remains where he belongs on stage again threatening mock fisticuffs as the crowd applaud.

There seems to be a misunderstanding as to which song is to be played and when it should be with 'Fuck The Pigs' and they have to start it again, but like a seasoned professional this simply amuses Clarke and reinvigorates his performance. He's flipping the bird akimbo by this point and following his tussle with the crowd starts pushing his guitarist while he's doing his solo, but the guy heroically stands his ground and doesn't miss a note. Still jumping like a jack in the box, the band's main man keeps the energy up to the end, chanting and raising his fist to 'We Are Warrior Soul' as the band go off to this chant from the crowd. There's no time for an encore so they leave the crowd wanting more.

Warrior Soul have a big following in the UK, but despite all the crowd not being there to see them (they'd played Proud Galleries about a week before as headliner and were on the bill here with a lot of other bands with multiple stages) they more than earned their slot at a festival with a lot of heavier bands. They may have looked like outsiders on the bill but they punched above their weight.

  • SeaDog57 : just an observation. I just got Issue 89 at the Bookstore and when i looked at the spine of the magazine it says "Fireworks Issue 85 Winter Jan - Mar 2019" Was this a misprint? The rest of the Magazine is Issue 89. Was just wondering did anyone else notice this?
