Portnoy says "I honestly think this is THE album of my career"; who am I to argue?

Since I first encountered Spock's Beard, Neal Morse's music has been prominent amongst my favourite listening. Until 2014's superb 'The Grand Experiment' his output had been badged under his name, but a settled line-up and greater collaboration gave birth to "the band" and what a band! Superb players and writers, three of whom are genuine lead vocalists, the fourth isn't bad either, all of which gives them a fascinating edge. By his own admission, Morse has become more comfortable with collaboration thanks to Transatlantic and Flying Colors and that really shines through here, as it did on their previous album.

To say this hundred minute concept piece (based on John Bunyan's 'The Pilgrim's Progress') is a beautifully created and seamless piece of work would be something of an understatement, it's sensational. As one has come to expect from any Morse/Mike Portnoy alliance, it's packed with superb themes and refrains that burrow into your head and stay there. There are no clunky or contrived links between tracks, they just flow perfectly from one into the next which is usually thanks to Portnoy's immense skill as an arranger. Watch 'The Making of...' DVDs for the evidence.

The variety of material is also impressive as they dip their toes into Prog Metal (Dream Theater anyone?) and even Country (trust me it works), as well as the more traditional Prog and the usual acoustic balladry; there are even little nods at Queen, 10CC and Moon Safari in some of the vocal arrangements and Led Zeppelin in the guitars on a couple of the heavier numbers. Eric Gillette is utterly superb on guitar, peeling off delicious solos on a regular basis and in any style you care to mention, the first appears just a couple of minutes in and it's sublime. Along with Morse and Bill Hubauer, he also provides wonderful vocals, the three combining superbly on several songs such as the marvellous 'Makes No Sense'. Even Portnoy's occasional lead vocals show that he's improving with each album.

Portnoy and Randy George make a sensational rhythm section, as always, and the keyboards are terrific throughout too. With twenty-three tracks on offer it's impossible to analyse them and frankly that's superfluous, the album is a continuous piece. Portnoy says "I honestly think this is THE album of my career"; who am I to argue?

Neal Morse has released some fantastic albums in the past but this is most definitely the pinnacle of his career so far. This is 2CD concept album based on the Novel Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan. Incredible double album of work from start to Finnish around 100 minutes.
