The Quireboys / Last Great Dreamers / Souls Of Tide - O2 Academy Islington, London (UK) - 23 April 2017

Early seventies-inspired Souls Of Tide were accomplished musicians with material accessible on a first listen. The music is inspired by bands like Deep Purple with an emphasis on guitar and Hammond Organ, but the vocals add a modern Symphonic Metal component. Also slightly Funky and slightly Bluesy at times, their music is a pleasing fusion and made for a quality opener.

Last Great Dreamers are heavily influenced by early seventies Glam, late seventies/early eighties Punk and late eighties Glam bands with a bit of T-Rex, Sweet, Elvis Costello, Ian Dury and Hanoi Rocks all thrown into the mix. Visually there's a touch of Clockwork Orange crossed with Dog's D'amour and black Punk spiky hair a la The Clash and others. Undeniably retro, it provided for an entertaining Rock 'n' Roll party vibe. The music was mostly trashy with sometimes sweet and simple melodies that reminded of Mike Monroe's stuff with "Landan town" late eighties vibes that busted out all over. I particularly enjoyed the drummer who stick-twirled like a boss.

The Quireboys were fabulous tonight, having now quite a settled line-up that includes a regular drummer. Determined to make the point they are still producing great new music Spike mentioned "we have more than one album you know" and repeatedly mentioned the new release 'Twisted Love'. So as well as all the classics we got a few new ones which didn't pale by comparison and in some ways were weightier musically that the early material, something that reflected greater experience in song-writing as they have gone along.

The Quireboys - Live 2

While Spike was his usual chirpy, smiley self, somehow the whole energy of the band has improved of late with cooperative playing and some of the greatest versions of 'Hey You' and 'I Don't Love You Any More' than I have seen (and I've seen them dozens of times back to the old Queerboys days). It was a different energy from the beginning, rather than lads on the piss having a good time it's now classy slide guitar and well-coordinated playing between Guy Griffin and Paul Guerin on guitar, with quiet excellence delivered by ivories man Keith Weir. Still, with the gypsy glamour provided by Spike, they haven't lost all their rough edges. Indeed, once the Last Great Dreamers join them for an encore of 'Sex Party' like all good such affairs, it got pretty fuckin' messy.

Still keeping Rock 'n' Roll alive, this was a good night of Classic Hard Rock with seventies and eighties influences, it was a diverse night that was classy and trashy all in one; personally I loved it.
