A spectacular Power Metal release.

Washington-based Sanctuary was formed in 1985. Upon release of 'Refuge Denied' in 1988, produced by Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, the album became an instant Power Metal classic. The follow-up 'The Mirror Black' was released in 1990 and was also well received by the Metal community, though by this time Grunge had arrived and, like so many other bands, Sanctuary found themselves out of favour with the record company and disbanded. The band morphed into Nevermore before Sanctuary returned in 2011, and in playing the festival circuit they reclaimed their Metal throne at such events as Bloodstock and Wacken, before releasing their comeback album 'The Year The Sun Died'.

The genesis of 'Inception' came about when guitarist Lenny Rutledge found some demos that predated the debut album, and with help from producer Chris "Zeuss" Harris (Queensrÿche, Hatebreed), they were able to restore the music to all its original furious glory. 'Dream Of The Incubus' is a dynamic mixture of early Mercyful Fate and Metal Church with hair-curling vocals, razor sharp guitars and penetrating lyrics being the name of the game.

If you can get over the overbearing banshee vocals, then 'Die For My Sins' and 'Soldiers Of Steel' have plenty of Metal punch to offer to any self-respecting fan. Drummer Dave Budbill has an incredible structure to his percussion work on this album and on 'Death Rider/Third War' he sounds like an arsenal of rapid firing canons.

The cover of the Jefferson Airplane classic 'White Rabbit' could easily have been a misfire, but fortunately vocalist Warrel Dane infuses a sense of brooding menace to give this song plenty of Metal bite. 'Battle Angels' – a song title fit for any Manowar album – brings a sea of chopping guitar riffs and brutal drums creating a classic Power Metal moment.

One of my favourite Speed Metal bands was Hellion and 'I Am Insane' taps in to this band with superb results. The vocals have a more commanding approach and the guitars build in layers to a euphoric finale.

Legendary artist Ed Repka designed the original debut album cover, and the inclusion of his work again adds an air of authenticity to this spectacular Power Metal release.
