A great album by a scandalously talented band of guys that can seriously play.

Ah, Italia, home of the Roman Empire (at least the headquarters of it), fine wine, beautiful people, erratic driving, gesticulating wildly, shouting and, of course, some dudes called Labyrinth.

Admittedly I am not too familiar with this veteran Italian Power/Prog Metal outfit. They've been around since 1991 and the line-up has changed more times than my wife getting ready for a night out, but their longevity shows in this, their latest and ninth album 'Architecture Of A God'. The present line-up boasts the return of Roberto Tiranti on lead vocals with Olaf Thorsen (lead guitars), Andrea Cantarelli (lead guitars), Nik Mazzucconi (bass), Oleg Smirnoff (Vision Divine, Edritch – keyboards) and John Macaluso (TNT, Riot, Ark – drums) completing the group.

'Still Alive', 'A New Dream', 'Someone Says', 'Architecture Of A God', 'Those Days' and 'We Belong To Yesterday' are the real stand out tracks for me, all are melodic but have enough Prog to keep fans of that genre interested. Alternatively, 'Bullets' and 'Take On My Legacy' opt for the Power Metal route. The rest of the offerings are very good too and I can only hear one filler on this album and that's 'Children', a Euro-Pop thing given new life and the one let down on what is a brilliant release.

The voice of Tiranti is something to behold. He has an amazing set of pipes on him and rarely goes off the scale but he does have the ability to do so whilst the rest of the band are splendid players to a man. The guitarists, of course, do the obligatory "look at the size of my dick" guitar solos on most of the songs, peddling their notes like they are running out of time to get them all in, but at other times they are super melodic and tasteful. The drums are massive, the bass is rumbling and the keyboards are all over this album, softening at the right times and opening up at others.

This album has it all; melodic in the main, heavy in parts, Proggy at the right times and it's classy, very classy. This is a great album by a scandalously talented band of guys that can seriously play. By that, I mean seriously and truly fucking play! I really, really like this album, it's been on constant play for nearly three weeks and I'm not bored of it.
