Slydigs - Deaf Institute, Manchester (UK) - 19 May 2017

Can you help the Slydigs to decide what they are? It would really help because they don't seem to know. About to become bigger perhaps and very pleasant, they've just released an EP, 'How Animal Are You', which veers from souped-up Blues to murder Blues to sixties Moddish Rock with a sly touch of Oasis; it's very good, as was the debut album 'Never To Be Tamed', but it's hardly a killer.

And here, with a group of happy fans, a fair few of whom appear to be friends and family, they deliver a good night out but stop short of really nailing it. Bassist Ben Breslin is a focus, a cheeky little soul bopping about and enjoying the music, more perhaps than even we are, laughing as the crowd put him off his backing "oohs" for 'She's My Rattlesnake'. Dean Fairhurst is a bear of a man with a top haircut and a voice just the commercial side of soulful, although he has a lovely grin most of the time, there isn't a front-man type swagger, he is pleasant and seems surprised by the kerfuffle tonight; it doesn't help that the mix makes all the speaking voices so muffled they could be wearing balaclavas.

Slydigs like their vintage looking kit and they certainly can play, raucous rhythm guitar, loopy bass, flowing solos from double denim denizen Louis Menguy and newer keyboard clatter' even if the electric Joanna sounded too harsh much of the time; they may play well and look good, but they don't really sell what they've got.

On the good side we had 'Easy Solution' with added bump 'n' grind, the raucous standout from the EP 'Give It Up Brother', the palpable relaxing during 'Electric Love' and a banging 'How Animal Are You'; they really do have a slinky power when they want to, it's just that they build up a groove and then a pseudo murder ballad arrives to dampen it.

Slydigs? Not having one; they are far from poor, they might even be on their way, a good turnout, a good look and some good tunes. They just need some time or someone to sit them down and say "we've got all these times, which types do we like best? Alright, concentrate on them". Then they may become big. The other piece of advice? 'You, Fairhurst, don't get your hair cut!'
