The overall feeling is that it's thirty-five years out of date, and ironically that means you get chrome when you really should've had gold.

Chrome Molly were definitely one of the also-rans of British Metal in the early eighties, with a few decent tracks, a few 'Kerrang!' covers and even a few fans. I remember buying at least one record by them, but to be fair I'd buy anything back then (seriously, Lisa Dominique?). I remember CM as an okay band but nothing special therefore it was quite a surprise to see that they'd reformed some years back with 'Hoodoo Voodoo' being their second album of the modern age. Curious? You betcha!

After the pointless intro track, CM get down to business with 'Can't Be Afraid Of The Dark', an upbeat track with a traditional Iron Maiden-esque galloping beat. It's not a bad track in a retro kind of way, with some really nice guitar from John Foottit that raises it above average. To be honest, it's Foottit that's the star of the show throughout the album providing as he does some truly exciting and uplifting guitar solos. The weakest link, unfortunately, is vocalist Steve Hawkins.

Back in the day he wasn't that great a singer, your standard NWOBHM stuff, and today he's pretty much the same. It's not awful by any means, but his voice drags the album back into the eighties. Chrome Molly come across as a band who'd like to be in the Premier League but are struggling at the bottom of the Championship, every so often delivering a surprising result. 'Dial 'F' For Freakshow' is a particular highlight as is 'Some Kind Of Voodoo', but both suffer from the mediocre vocals.

I was hoping to enjoy 'Hoodoo Voodoo', but in the main it's just too middle-of-the-road to bother with after my reviewing duties are done. Foottit makes it worthy of listening to, however, and some of the songs have a nice bounce and spirit to them, but the overall feeling is that it's thirty-five years out of date, and ironically that means you get chrome when you really should've had gold.
