An album that delights and disappoints in equal measure.

Endfield are a German/British band which has been slogging around for some time now in various guises, finally getting things together to produce this, their debut album.

First impressions aren't great as they lead off with 'Girl On Fire', a song about 'The Hunger Games' that is not a million miles away from a funeral dirge – it's very slow and Gothy and makes for a terrible opener to an album and is a track with little or no redeeming features. Surely things can only get better?

Thankfully they do, with lead single 'Good Timing' lifting the pace and the emotions; it's a lightweight Pop song with Rock overtones and a catchy heart, sounding like something I would have enjoyed back in the late eighties. 'Next Mistake' continues the bright and breezy theme and against all expectations, I found myself looking forward to the rest of the album. 'Not Alone' doesn't disappoint, coming across like a Police song that got lost in the wash, and whilst Glyn Brookman has a good vocal style for the music, I'd love to hear Sting have a go at this one.

Fireworks - The Ultimate Magazine For Melodic Rock Music

Later on, 'So Long' allows guitarist Sven Hanke (aka "Doc") to deliver some plucking straight out of the Mark Knopfler songbook and it's nice to spot similar influences throughout. The most upbeat track is the catchy 'The Game' which rattles along perfectly and very melodically, only to be utterly ruined by a Rap in the middle that is as out of place as a vegetarian at an all-you-can-eat carvery. It's such a shame as this is otherwise a cracking song.

Overall, 'Right To The Top' is an album that delights and disappoints in equal measure. Brookman has a decent enough voice when he is doing Pop-based Rock, but when the pace slows he sounds awful. When the band just deliver melody and a retro Pop Rock style they really are very good indeed, but when they veer from this, things go a bit shite. I hope that they realize this and stick with it to make a follow-up that is full of melody and pace with no bloody Rapping!
