A great way to experience an important Rock band that laugh in the face of genre definition.

Disturbed are no strangers to cover versions. Tears For Fears' 'Shout', Genesis' 'Land Of Confusion' and Judas Priest's 'Living After Midnight' all spring to mind. However, the attention afforded the band's version of Simon & Garfunkel's 'Sound Of Silence', arranged and recorded for the brilliant 'Immortalize' album in 2015, has become something of a sensation, resulting in appearances on late night American chat shows as musical guests. Anyone familiar with Disturbed may have been surprised by the choice of song, but in no way surprised by its execution and impact.

'Live At Red Rocks' captures a show from August 2016, during part of their mammoth tour that still continues, and features a diverse set-list culled from all six studio albums. The band appear energised in contrast to the last time I saw them in the UK at the end of 2010, when they seemed lacklustre and devoid of any animation or emotion. The five year break away from each other was beneficial in terms of creativity and mental rejuvenation and the resulting 'Immortalize' was so much better than the previous studio effort, 'Asylum', as good as that seemed at the time.

'Ten Thousand Fists' is a perfect opener, befitting the live arena and a chance to interact with the crowd from the first minute. Everyone feels involved and you can picture arms raised and the mosh pit bouncing. The whole show has energy to burn and even when the pace slows for "that" song, there is still a feeling of expectancy and passion. Lead singer David Draiman encourages audience participation at every opportunity and his unmistakable delivery is both menacing and admirable, whilst guitarist Dan Donegan plays as though cloned. Riffs and solos come with ease, weaving in and out of both drummer Mike Wengren and bass player John Moyer's rhythmic bedrock. Highlights for me are new songs 'The Vengeful One' and 'The Light', but it's still hard not to be moved by 'The Game', 'Stupify', 'Inside The Fire', 'Indestructible' and 'Voices'. 'Down With The Sickness' (naturally) brings things to a close and then it's time to take a breather before hitting repeat.

The inclusion of a visual document of the show would have made this the perfect package (I'm sure it will appear eventually), but this is still a rewarding listen, and a great way to experience an important Rock band that laugh in the face of genre definition.
