Power 5 is, perhaps, the best kept secret of the Czech Republic but hopefully 2017 will change all of that.

Straight from my first listen, this double disc release reminded me of my discovery of the amazing vistas of Progressive and molten Rock that were revealed to me back in the mid-seventies. A friend of mine, who immigrated to Canada from the Czech Republic (although it wasn't known as such then), turned me on to some amazing Rock music that she brought with her from her homeland. We would spend hours listening to these great artists' respective albums and I was greatly impressed and taken aback by the quality of the recordings, the packaging and the art work. Now in the 21st century, and with Power 5, I'm equally impressed all over again!

Formed in 1996, this Czech five-piece show us a sense of confidence, grand ability and excellence. A little history for you, P5 recorded their first album in 1997, making for the beginning of an illustrious twenty-plus year musical career. A career that has seen progressions, some setbacks and some membership changes, but all through the years the group persevered and continued recording, releasing and gigging across their home country.

In 2015, the group regained a keyboardist in Martin Valcik and continued to record their new album 'Talisman'. The first disc of this double release is the latest new album, a ten song set of Heavy Rock energised with the speed of Metal on steroids! A heavy sound, but one that is expanded as they explore new fields and present us with a wide-ranging collection of Melodic Molten Rock!

Olin Skrabal's vocals match the group's soaring guitarist Lukas Langer. Producing the muscle to P5's sound is bassist Jiri Jagos and master drummer Milan Skrabal. Lightning speed fret-work meshes with equally fast but tough bottom rhythms and punchy percussion. All of the rivers of sound are then layered with glorious keyboard interplay and vocals that are both rich and, at times, soaring.

On 'Talisman' we hear a musical confidence and, perhaps, a new found energy. Skrabal's vocal style is very emotive, however it stands up exceptionally well with the style of Metal that P5 produce. The first three pieces, 'Triumf', 'Talisman' and 'Destruktor', set the mood for the whole of the album – soaring music, majestic performances and a keen sense of melody during which absolute power is displayed throughout!

With the second disc of this ambitious independent release, P5 look inward and peer back over their career. Fifteen tracks that chronicle their rich musical bank, allowing us more than a little glimpse into their past. Known for their heaviness and speed, P5 have astounded music lovers throughout the Czech Republic and beyond. This 'Best Of...' set is certainly that and more! For those of us that are not too familiar with the band, this dual disc release is the perfect way to discover this amazing group! Not only will you be suitably impressed with what you hear on 'Talisman', but with disc two your feelings will be cemented by the high calibre of musicianship put forth from their earliest works as well.

All in all, this is a very ambitious offering and being that P5 are for all intents and purposes still independent, it's amazing! Power 5 is, perhaps, the best kept secret of the Czech Republic but hopefully 2017 will change all of that!
