Take any other decent lead singer and have him sing over this and you would have a very competent album indeed.

Back when I was growing up, Southern Rock bands came from, well, "The South", as in the southern states of the USA. These days, it seems as if there is more Southern Rock coming from mainland Europe as opposed to the place where the Good Lord intended it to.

Neverfall are a four-piece Swiss band that have been together since 2003 with one previous album to their credit. In terms of possible influences, this group draw slight comparisons with Molly Hatchet (more so for the vocal similarities with Danny Joe Brown or Phil McCormack) with a touch of The Doors thrown in for good measure. Neverfall pedal a mix of Classic/Southern Rock which in fairness you cannot easily categorise, apart from the fact that it is indeed Rock. These boys have plenty of riffs and well-arranged songs on hand, decent guitar work and some rather tasty keyboard embellishments to boot. However, the problem is their lead singer Leo Berney who is neither as gruff as Brown nor as refined as Jim Morrison and quite frankly he ends up going nowhere quickly.

Musically, it's dyed in the wool early to mid-seventies riff Rock with big meaty riffs that are nicely coloured with Hammond Organ, but despite the songs being well written and extremely well delivered, I'm left really amazed that a band who've been together for fourteen years have failed to grasp the idea that their lead singer is in fact the only weak point. That alone makes me think either they have no friends or that they're just happy to be playing together as a bunch of mates and don't really care what anyone thinks.

Songs such as the title track, 'Still I Went' and 'It's All Too Much (Addiction)' prove that Neverfall do have it musically, but again – and I'm not harping on am I? – it's the vocals that, truth be told, are extremely poor. Possibly the kindest thing I can say is take any other decent lead singer and have him sing over this and you would have a very competent album indeed.

What I can say is that I will likely never listen to this again and, in all honesty, you the reader shouldn't be expected to listen to it in the first place. Someone needs to tell them they need a proper singer... and if they don't, then I have just done so.
