Rock Goddess - The Borderline, London (UK) - 23 June 2017

These glamorous ladies are just like fine wine (or maybe fine whisky) as they will give you a kick in the ass! Rock Goddess held their EP launch at the packed Borderline and delivered a show of twenty-one songs that never got boring and showed how much more they have to give in 2017 – even more than they delivered in the eighties. If anything, the new material actually outshone the old as the girls kept the energy up throughout in what singer Jody Turner herself admitted was "a fuckin' long set". It is testament to their entertainment value that it seemed to go by in a flash.

Rock Goddess Borderline London Live 2

It was only three songs in before they introduced 'Back Off' from the new EP and by the next song 'Take Your Love Away' bassist Tracey Lamb was wiggling her butt in delight (she still has killer buns and so nailed it) as Jody Turner was in aggressive good voice and delivered her all Metal solo in a coordinated assault by these powerful women on a willing and appreciative London crowd. Sensing her control, Jody Turner referred to what was going on in her mind when she wrote 'Bite You To Death' which had a nice little circular riff, one that was raucous but in a good way. This number showed her vocal scream off to great advantage as they smashed into a crescendo finish. By 'To Be Betrayed', the crowd were shouting "oh yeah" to the Diamond Head-like titanic riffs, and when Jody Turner's freewheeling, high pitched solos were laid over the top of these like a juicy pie with contrasting cream on top, songs like 'This Time' were the perfect melt in the brain combination hits. Hip thrusting Lamb and skin pounding Julie Turner punctuated Jody Turner's perfect screaming and demonstrated that despite there being only three members when they are combined in sync, sometimes less is more. The enthusiastic crowd sang 'You've Got Fire' which took the energy level still higher.

As we moved into the second song from the new EP, 'It's More Than Rock 'N' Roll' someone shouted "Jody we love you" and the girls took up ammunition pose with the guitars, fully aware that they were killing it with the punchy verse vocals and its sexy undulating chorus. As they pushed on into a totally new number entitled 'Flyin'' we got a Bluesier solo from Jody Turner as she stomped with the excitement of a child with a new toy. 'Love Lingers Still' saw a lot of head-banging and singing from the crowd and by the time the show reached 'Make My Night' it was clear to me that this was the best gig I had ever seen them play. During 'God Be With You' Jody Turner asked "are you enjoying yourselves or fuckin' what?' and in reply she got a roof lifting "yeah" from the crowd who then sing along unprompted to 'Heavy Metal Rock 'N' Roll'. Until I heard 'We're All Metal' this evening, I was unaware of its tremendous live potential and when Jody Turner got lost back stage in the remodelled Borderline the crowd roared out the infectious chorus louder and louder as if recalling her back for a slightly premature encore; finally, she found her way and burst out from the bar to the deafening chant. Not losing the opportunity of such a vocal crowd, she handed them the microphone, which included a slightly bashful Dave Ling from Classic Rock who partook I am sure only because it was Jody Turner who asked him. She returned to the stage for the triumphant real encore in a set of which they must surely have been proud.

Rock Goddess Borderline London Live 1

There are few who can touch Rock Goddess as far as all-girl bands who truly kick ass as hard as any other Classic Metal band you care to mention – be it male or female. These girls are not back for the sake of it, they mean business and, for a threesome, punch well above their weight. London crowds can be tough, by instinct they know when you're faking it, but when you really mean it they have a dog-like sense of exactly what is what and they catch the stick and they throw it back. The return of Rock Goddess to the Borderline tonight showed that their fans have always remained there waiting in the wings.
