Stevie Nicks - Hyde Park, London (UK) - 09 July 2017

Stevie Nicks to play a dreamy summertime set of solo and Fleetwood Mac songs

A beautiful summers day, with golden rays of sunshine pouring down on the 65,000 strong expectant crowd and not a 'Mac' in sight − unless you count the handful of beautifully rendered Fleetwood Mac songs that Stevie Nicks joyously rained down upon an ecstatic crowd.Nicks played a starry set of songs, studded with 'deep cuts', from her long solo career. All of which was perfectly played by a band of top-notch session musicians. The opening chords to 'Gold And Braid', from her Bella Donna album, seeped out of the speakers as Nicks, with dress flowing, entered the stage to sing her way straight into everyone's hearts. Those hearts were pounding harder as the trilling motif to 'Gypsy' struck up and the countless wannabe Stevie's flailed and swirled along with wild abandon.

A tsunami of applause ensued as bass and drum locked into the familiar soft groove of 'Dreams'. But the only thunder happening was from the players onstage as they locked into the songs mellow rhythm. Resplendent in a pair of rock-star shades − should the glare of her own superstar status prove to be too dazzling − Nicks opened her gold standard voice to sing "now here you go again, you say you want your freedom" as she held one and all in the fingerless gloved palms of her elegant hands. Hands into which she buried her face as the emotions of the song seemed to visibly drain her.

Stevie credited the writing of the Buckingham Nicks song 'Crying In The Night' as the pivotal point in her life, when she could finally give up waitressing and concentrate on a full-time career in music. She even quipped that she could do a lecture hall tour with all the stories that she has collected about her songs. Integrity is a quality that Nicks has by the bucket load. All of her songs seem to have a personal poignancy reflecting a time, place or emotion in her life and she certainly sings each with the sincerity as though they were written yesterday and played to you for the first time.

A 'doink' of cowbell combined with curlicues of guitar notes wafting over the superb sound system heralded the next 'Mac' set stopper: 'Gold Dust Woman'. Its crescendo of sound found a re-energised Nicks rolling back time, her husky voice chanting over the swell of music from her crack band of musicians. Notably, Waddy Watchell's guitar weaving a tapestry of 'licks' as he built a tower of sound over the songs solid groove. The interplay and cohesion of all musicians were a pleasure to watch and listen to.

The multiple costume changes that occurred during her set made sure that all eyes stayed trained on her. One moment swirling a cape draped around her shoulders, the next wearing a heavy feathered white coat −on this roasting day − as if to embark on a glamorous tour of the Arctic region. Nicks remained the centre of attention, occasionally removing her sunglasses to reveal her mascaraed eyes. Close ups on the big screens, placed at each side of the stage, revealed the picture of the ageless and unobtainable beauty that she ever was. Still the gypsy angel adorned in her thready finery, drifting across the stage like an exotic perfume capturing her mesmerised audience under her spell.

"I cannot never play 'Rhiannon' on stage. I take her with me everywhere and I just can't seem to get rid of her." announced Nicks as a breathless version of the song played out. The audience, woozy from singing the magical chorus to this tale of a Welsh witch, was still under the spell that only an enchantress of Nicks' calibre can magic up.

The closing cascade of acoustic on 'Landslide' , a song Nicks wrote in Aspen before stardom, when dreaming of days like this, released her besotted crowd from her magnetic spell as she closed her magical performance.

This former waitress served up a classy show of magical, dreamy summertime soft rock.
