This is definitely a great second album.

It's been quite a while but one of Brazil's finest Progressive Power Metal bands has returned after a three year wait with their sophomore album. Sadly, Luiz Fernando Poleto, who was reminiscent of Bruce Dickinson, has departed – possibly for family reasons – and in his place has stepped fellow San Paulo native and ex-Darksmile and Hellrising singer Dan Figueiredo. The rest of the band, consisting of guitarists Glauco Barros (who handled final production) and Rick Leite, drummer Peferson Mendes and bassist (and manager) Wellington Consoli – who also designed the fabulous artwork again via his own graphic design company – are all still involved.

It should be noted that Dream Theater, Evergrey, Iron Maiden, Blind Guardian and Iced Earth feature amongst Perc3ption's influences. This will give listeners a good idea of what they can expect by way of a certain writing style, but the Helloween and Kamelot influences I detected on their début, indeed in some of the obvious song structures, have now gone.

Figueiredo has a much rougher edge to his vocals than Poleto but attains a similar powerful range and with the more aggressive songs on this album, it works really well. 'Persistence Makes The Difference' is a very powerful opening statement with Speed Metal riffing bludgeoning the listener and the continued heavy riffing maintaining a strong presence throughout. The first single 'Magnitude 666' was released last February (accompanied by a cool video) and alongside the down-tuned riffing and fast-paced elements, there's a keyboard overlay that embellishes the more melodic moments where there's also traces of typical Maiden rhythm lines. Along with the prefix 666 in the title, there's perhaps a little nod going on in there. Indeed, the Progressive ten minute epic 'Braving The Beast' has a riffing mid-section so typically Maiden that again, alongside the title, gives more than a hint of its influence.

The second single released last July, 'Oblivion's Gate', is a wonderfully melodic song with a hypnotic pulsing keyboard intro that segues into melodic guitar that is in complete contrast to some of the heavier numbers, such as 'Extinction Level Event' with its speed riffing elements. 'Through The Invisible Horizons' is another epic with plenty of lush melodic guitars, time changes and a Maiden-style melody alongside the heavy riffing, whilst the power ballad 'Welcome To The End' is immense, complete with special guest male and female Operatic vocals. Overall, this is definitely a great second album!
