If As Lions can introduce a change in tempo to some songs for album number two, then they may gain more fans.

As Lions were born out of the ashes of Rise To Remain in 2015, led by singer Austin Dickinson who has a rather famous father who fronts a certain Heavy Metal band whose name ends in Maiden! Guitarist and keyboardist Conor O'Keefe and guitarist Will Homer also came along with Stefan Whiting on bass and drummer Dave Fee completing the line-up. The band's been building a steady following and aided by supporting Trivium and Five Finger Death Punch. They put a four track EP out last October and all the tracks are included here on their full-length debut.

The album opens with 'Aftermath', which is an "in-your-face" number with crashing guitars, layers of keyboard and a particularly powerful vocal from Dickinson. The thing that lets it down is the production and this runs through the eleven tracks – it is too slick and polished. The guitars could sound more aggressive as I'm sure they do in a live environment. 'The Suffering' has Dickinson singing with angst, and again it's powerful, but it could have been so much more. 'Bury My Dead' starts off with a haunting piano and when the guitar kicks in it sounds like 30 Seconds To Mars and Hoobastank. 'Deathless' is very Dead Letter Circus and appears to be an attempt to write a hit single, as does the title track which contains Pop Rock sensibilities, especially with the electronic elements. It's very infectious though, so much so that I noticed even my cat was tapping her paw and nodding her head throughout the chorus!

'White Flags' is more of the same – very catchy but a little too clean; Dickinson is singing his heart out though and I'm sure his dad would approve. 'Pieces' has a keyboard-led intro and the riff is very Pop Metal. 'World On Fire' also has a slow piano intro and I was hoping for a bit of variation, however, when the guitars enter the melee it sounds pretty much like what has preceded it. This is the crux of the issue, which a lot of listeners may have with the album – the songs are too one dimensional.

My personal view – I really like the album... a lot and if As Lions can introduce a change in tempo to some songs for album number two and take the polish off the production, then they may gain more fans.
