If IE, Symphony X and the like float your boat, this new release is a must have album.

Witherfall are a Los Angeles-based Progressive Metal band put together by guitarist Jake Dreyer (Iced Earth, Kobra & The Lotus guest, ex-White Wizzard), singer Joseph Michael (ex-WW) and the late Adam Sagan (Circle II Circle, ex-Into Eternity) who sadly lost his battle with blood cancer late last year. They play, as you would expect from their day jobs, a very aggressive style of Power Prog Metal-tinged with flourishes of Neo-Classical guitar work. They are also, it has to be said given the aggression found in their songs, a very melodic musical outfit.

Out of the eight tracks on offer, only six are actual songs with the other two cuts being short musical interludes. Yet, with each of the six main songs clocking in at average of about eight-minutes, you still get great value for money. Opener 'Portrait' is an intense way to begin things. With bold guitar breaks, shredding solos, powerful bass and drum runs and a killer vocal, Witherfall don't shy away from ramming their music down your throat, although the chorus is wonderfully melodic with multi-layered harmony vocals that give the band's aggressive musical tendencies a place to breath and grow.

These melodic sensibilities can be found throughout the bands songs which, as heavy as they are, help to give them a decidedly different musical flavour than your average Prog Metal act. Take a listen to 'What Are We Dying For', the ten-minute bombastic brilliance that is 'Sacrifice', the early Yngwie Malmsteen-esque 'End Of Time' or finally the over the top Metal-tastic 'Nobody Sleeps Here...' for proof of this.

Every once in a while, it's nice to have the cobwebs in your ears blown away by some wonderfully played and written Metal and Witherfall do just that with 'Nocturnes & Requiems'. So if IE, Symphony X and the like float your boat, this new release is a must have album.
