I'd heartily recommend to anyone who enjoys the Bluesier side of the tracks.

Back in 2003, vocalist and guitar player Thorbjørn Risager formed a group to play around his homeland of Denmark, peddling an authentic set of Blues-infused songs carried by his distinctive vocals. Releasing a string of albums under his own name, Risager would end up signing with respected Blues label Ruf in 2014, which was home to the likes of Joanne Shaw Taylor's early albums, among others. The group name The Black Tornado was subsequently added, a reflection of the input Risager felt they had on his work, he didn't want them to simply be seen as back-up musicians. They would release 'Many Roads' in 2014, 'Songs From The Road' a year later, and now we have their latest effort 'Change My Game'.

From the very first bars, Risager's Baritone voice rings out clearly and is tailor made for the Blues material this band produce. 'I Used To Love You' is an atmospheric opener while 'Dreamland', with its distorted Rock riff, shows Risager is just as comfortable with a more aggressive delivery as he is the smokey Bar-room style. The Funk work out of the title track is a joy, and the other big bonus is Thorbjørn Risager & The Black Tornado features a fully paid-up horns section which ticks a big box for me, and reminds me of some of Joe Bonamassa's live shows where he added a brass trio to enhance his material.

Swampy Blues is another flavour Risager is more than comfortable with as evidenced on the excellent 'Holler 'N' Moan', while 'Hold My Lover Tight' juxtaposes an organ in to almost add a Deep Purple vibe. 'Maybe It's Alright' is another song worth highlighting for its infectious beat and great female backed chorus.

I'd not crossed paths with Risager's music before, but his excellent voice, ability to infuse a variety of styles into a cohesive album and his use of female backing and a horns section means this is something I'd heartily recommend to anyone who enjoys the Bluesier side of the tracks.
