Fans of Prog/Power Metal will find plenty to enjoy here.

This is Vicinity's second full album, their debut, 'Awakening' having been released in 2013 a full five years after an EP, 'Diffusion of Innovation'. Comprised of Alexander K. Lykke (vocals), Kim-Marius H. Olsen (guitars), Pierre-Nicolai H. Schmidt-Melbye (bass), Ivar A. Nyland (keyboards) and Frode Lillevold (drums), this Norwegian quintet tread a similar musical path to the likes of Circus Maximus, Vanden Plas, Pagan's Mind, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden and at times there's also a hint of my old mates, Balance Of Power.

In this over-crowded genre there's always the potential pitfall of coming across as generic, but Vicinity have just enough about them not to fall into this trap entirely, albeit they are close on a few occasions. Naturally, the familiar tropes are all there but none of them are used too much or too often. There's nothing I find more off-putting than incessant double bass drumming, and whilst it's certainly present, I didn't find it too distracting as I have with other bands of this ilk. Vicinity seem to know just when rein it in.

Lykke's voice and phrasing has a similar feel to that of Pete Nicholls (IQ), albeit set to a heavier background and with the power of Damon Wilson (Threshold). There are only six tracks, and all bar one have a running time in excess of eight minutes and generally well over that figure. Closer 'The Long Goodbye' is a real epic as it clocks in at over twenty-two minutes, it's a track I think could be trimmed a bit due to the fact that the opening couple of minutes tend to drag a little.

The instrumental intro to the opening song, 'The Unwritten Manifest', lays down the band's marker straight away as each of the instruments get to shine; Olsen's lovely guitar runs being matched stride for stride by Nyland's keyboards. What's quickly established is the band's ability to write both strong riffs and melodies as is the case with the piano intro to 'Mountainfall' and its memorable chorus. This track certainly demonstrates the band's abilities as they get technical and heavy at various times in true DT style before returning to the main theme and the marvellous multi-vocal arrangement. 'Extinction' is the album's shortest track and again it features a really strong bridge and a chorus that's catchy as hell.

Fans of Prog/Power Metal will find plenty to enjoy here.
