Warrior Soul - The Joint, London (UK) - 02 December 2017

Set up as the album launch party, this performance was part showcase, part thank you to loyal fans. The new Warrior Soul album 'Back On The Lash' is a refocus on the halcyon days of the band, and the set-list reflects that concentration back on what made the band great, the intense persona of main-man Kory Clarke and the passion of the songs backed with a great Hard Rock old-school Metal sound. Of course, Clarke is the only original member, but if there's something new in the sound it's the addition of fantastic new Rock 'n' Roll guitar solos from Stevie Pearce (the type that Faster Pussycat would include in their set in a heartbeat) and any fan of the classic period of this band would have been delighted to have been here tonight.

Kicking off with new track 'American Idol', it is the large theme, multi-layered in meaning, observant stuff wrapped in the big punchy sound we expect from Clarke. It's a treat to see him up close in an intimate venue. Resolutely outside of the system, he doesn't do favours to commercial interests, it would be against his nature and everything Warrior Soul stands for, but I do stop to consider how this stuff deserves to be in arena and just how privileged the audience present is tonight. 'Get Fucked Up', also a track from the new album, is the hi-energy, nihilistic, driving, forceful and out of control party song Warrior Soul gestate, illustrating why Clarke is always one hundred percent proof and no compromise in everything he does, even when getting wasted. Having said that, Clarke tonight is absolutely on point and sober. Having a few beers only, his razor-sharp intellect and critical appraisal he brings to the world is not dulled by any artificial means tonight.

However, he does not need any kind of chemical crutch to be truly magnetic, and even in this small rehearsal studio venue suddenly it's Madison Square Gardens in spectacle when he is on stage and I'd be happy to see him anywhere, anytime knowing I'd be guaranteed a great show. Immediately fist flying, flipping the bird, microphone wielding, splaying legs and blonde curls flying, he is every inch the Rock star and that must translate even when he is buying milk in a store – it seeps from every pore. For 'Bad News Rock 'N' Roll Boyfriend', he is high-kicking, spinning and turning, inciting the crowd to fever pitch. We get a serious dose of the classics such as 'Love Destruction', 'Salutation From The Ghetto Nation' with its great clarion of a guitar intro, 'Wasteland' and 'Jump For Joy' with its monster riffs. By now, there is electricity in the air and the band are simply letting rip. Clarke is jumping around in circles with his fist aloft. In 'Payback's A Bitch', to not lose the personal touch he sings to every member of the audience across in a grand sweep.

Warrior Soul Live London 2017

The energy builds and builds tonight to a climax, so much so that Clarke removes 'The Losers' from the set-list, not wanting a slow song to affect the white-hot energy. It's amazing in view of the select audience as it feels like there are many more present. The fact that performances are ephemeral is what makes them precious in a way, but I truly wish they would have made the DVD of this one so more people could have enjoyed a band back to tremendous form.
