Do they need to conform to what we want? Oh no, they are who they want to be, and that's enough.
Is it about this for The Cadillac Three... or are they after consolidation? Perhaps neither, because this reeks of progression. Their last album, 'Bury Me In My Boots', was a brilliant break away from anything banging or Metallic, it was about the songs, this may be about where they're from and who that makes them. For 'Legacy' is mostly a Country album, not really a Country Rock album, more like Chris Robinson or even Garth Brooks.
Don't let that put you off though, this still Rocks somewhat and Jaren Johnston still has a wonderful way with a tune; there is real beauty here along with whimsical nostalgia and simple party fun. Would The Cadillac Three deliver anything else? Whilst opener 'Cadillacin'' is as rough as a horsehair brush but with an openness that promises much and a riff strangely reminiscent of David Bowie's 'Fame', there are tracks like 'Ain't That Country' which is, in addition to having a beautiful melody, and 'Take Me To The Bottom' which unfortunately conjures up thoughts of Kid Rock before a redemptive Scott Holiday style solo.
'Dang If We Didn't' is interesting, mostly because a Suzi Quatro Glam stomp and clap section is not what we expect, and 'Legacy', like their earlier effort 'White Lightning', is the centre piece, achingly meant and rolling with a well-oiled excellence; it has the acreage to impress but the simplicity to delight. Perhaps the best example of their current sound is the groovy, soulful and drawling but FM radio smooth 'Hank & Jesus', very accomplished and an absolute delight.
We had The Cadillac Three in the early days, around the time of 'Tennessee Mojo', they were shit kickers with rumbustious riffage. Now? They're their own band, one about songs and not about musical sections. Yes, this album is more of a Country record and that will understandably turn some off, but Johnston and the gents are lots of things and they are moving around, bands rarely do that. I never thought this band would do that and it's so good to see, the song is what is important and here you will find some gorgeous melodies, easy grace and telepathic playing. Do they need to conform to what we want? Oh no, they are who they want to be, and that's enough.
