These albums highlight The Rolling Stones at their very best and in their favourite environment – the live stage.

"One of the greatest live bands in the history of Rock 'n' Roll". You won't get many arguments from yours truly concerning that statement; however, witnessing this great band live has eluded me over the years, except for several DVDs of classic footage. These three concerts have all been previously available on DVD, but Eagle and Universal are now releasing them on CD for the first time.

'Ladies & Gentleman (Live)' was recorded in Texas in 1972 as part of the 'Exile On Main St.' US tour, and is considered by many Stones' fans to be one of the band's greatest ever performances; even the band themselves rate this performance highly. It features classics from the late sixties and early seventies with the twin guitar pairing of Keith Richards and Mick Taylor. A gig that starts with 'Brown Sugar', 'Bitch' and 'Gimme Shelter', and concludes with 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' and 'Street Fighting Man' is always going to be a bit special.

Roll on six years, and Ronnie Wood had replaced Taylor, and the band was back in The States touring to support their Number One album 'Some Girls'. Two-thirds of the set-list changed from the '...Gentleman' tour, with only the classics 'Tumbling Dice', 'Happy', 'Love In Vain', '...Sugar' and '...Flash' remaining from the aforementioned 1972 tour. Bob Clearmountain has expertly re-mixed and re-mastered the original multi-track tapes to produce a live album of stunning quality.

A question – "what do you do on a night off from a mammoth US tour supporting your newly released album 'Tattoo You'?" The answer – "take yourself off to Buddy Guy's Checkerboard Lounge Blues Club in Chicago and join Blues legend Muddy Waters and his band on stage". Fortunately, someone had the foresight to record the event (David Hewitt on the Record Plant Black truck) which, once mixed by Bob Clearmountain, sounds a million dollars. For those who enjoyed last year's Number One album 'Blue & Lonesome', then this is an essential addition to your collection. 'Checkerboard Lounge: Live In Chicago 1981' is a truly unique performance featuring Rolling Stones' band members Mick Jagger, Richards, Wood and Ian Stewart joining the Blues legend (definitely not misused on this occasion) Waters and his band on stage, to run through renowned Blues standards including 'Baby Please Don't Go', 'Mannish Boy', 'Hoochie Coochie Man', 'One Eyed Woman' and 'Champagne And Reefer'. What's even more amazing is that the whole performance was played out in front of less than two hundred people; the following three nights The Rolling Stones would play three sell-out shows at the seventeen thousand capacity Rosemont Horizon which is also in Chicago.

I think these albums will appeal to both hardcore fans (who no doubt already have the DVDs) and casual fans alike as they highlight The Rolling Stones at their very best and in their favourite environment – the live stage.
