I am not as impressed as I was with her previous two releases.

Can there ever be a Robin Beck album review without reference to that song, the Coca-Cola promoting 'First Time' back in 1989 that launched this pocket rocket to international attention? That album, the Desmond Child-infused 'Trouble Or Nothing', set the bar for female-fronted Melodic Rock and has rarely been equalled, never mind bettered! Beck's own output in the nineties veered away from that musical template, but since signing with Frontiers back in 2005, she has been happy to revisit past glories, releasing a collection of outstanding albums.

This latest release comes courtesy of the pen of Clif Magness (Steve Perry, Avril Lavigne) and has Beck proclaiming it as her best album since '...Nothing'. Hmmmm...
First thing to notice is that Magness has dragged Beck away from that big eighties sound to a more updated, dare one say "modern' feel on many songs. Opener 'Island' takes me back to Michelle Branch's 'Spirit Room', especially on the chorus (that is a good thing!), as does 'Lost', while the following 'On The Bright Side' is the kind of attitude-filled, spunky song that should be all over today's Rock radio stations.

The ballads 'In These Eyes' and 'On To Something' are what we would normally expect from Beck, emotionally delectable vocals caressing the soul, while the immense 'Here I Am' is, for me, the standout track on the album, all layered vocals and a superb chorus.

Elsewhere, I find the verses of 'Me Just Being Me' annoying, steeped in that kind of funky Aerosmith vibe but saved by a great chorus, while 'Girl Like Me' is just Aerosmith's 'Rag Doll' in different clothes.

The title track and first single, 'Love Is Coming', isn't immediate but is definitely a grower (check out the superb video on YouTube) while closer 'Warrior' slows the pace right down, reminding me of Jaime Kyle but with a disappointingly lack-lustre chorus and not the way I would have chosen to finish the album.

I can certainly see how some songs on here could certainly open up a wider fan-base for Robin Beck, but as a proud card-holding member of her appreciation society, I am not as impressed as I was with her previous two releases. Her best album since '...Nothing'? Not by a country mile...
