A monster of an album.

I'm sure for some, the first thought will be Mastodon, really? Yes, Mastodon; uncompromising, loud, brash and above all heavy! I first heard of this band when they released their 'Leviathan' album back in 2004 and they have remained a firm favourite here at Johnson Towers. This new offering, entitled 'Emperor Of Sand', is no exception to that rule. There's just something about the power of this band's music that I love, and on this release they have really pulled out all the stops and extracted everything from their musical bag of tricks to make this a brutish, in-your-face Metal Juggernaut.

Firstly, I have to praise the superb production from Brendan O'Brien (AC/DC, Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen) because his work has given the songs from 'Emperor...' a vitality all their own. Secondly, I take my hat off to the band themselves – Brann Dailor, Brent Hinds, Bill Kelliher and Troy Sanders – as it is clear they have collectively poured their all into this album. As you play it, you can feel the blood, sweat and tears they have obviously shed in every note played.

Take a listen to this album and you'll immediately know what I mean. 'Sultan's Curse', first single 'Show Yourself', 'Precious Stones' and 'Steambreather' leave the starting gate like thoroughbred horses at a championship race, each trying to get into first place, but close behind and keeping the race alive are 'Word To The Wise', 'Ancient Kingdom', 'Andromeda', 'Scorpion Breath' and the fabulous 'Jaguar God' who are also all fighting to cross the finishing line in first place.

In-your-face, never giving an inch and dragging you along for the ride, Mastodon aren't looking to take any prisoners with 'Emperor Of Sand', instead, they are looking to conquer and this album and its songs are their weapons of choice. This is a monster of an album and no mistake.
