For fans of DP and Classic Rock in general 'Venus And Volcanus' is definitely worth checking out.

'Venus To Volacnus' is the sophomore effort from Purpendicular, a band founded in 2007 by Irish front-man Robby Thomas Walsh. The group take their name from the fifteenth Deep Purple studio album and the first one to include Steve Morse. At times, Walsh's vocals uncannily resemble those of Ian Gillan, but he does have his own unique timbre too.

The album shoots out of the traps with 'The Bullet' and highlights the impeccably high standard of musicianship within the band; you wouldn't really expect anything less from the world's most booked DP tribute act. This is the one track on the album that wouldn't be out of place on any of the last few DP albums. Oliver Klammt's keyboards are prominent in 'Moving' and throughout the whole album, and along with Walsh's vocals give Perpendicular that distinct Purple sound. The rhythm section comprises of J├╝rgen Zink (drums) and Winnie Bucher (bass) with guitarist Herb Bucher completing the line-up; he also produced the album and co-wrote most of the songs with Walsh. Bucher has his own style, which gives Perpendicular their originality, without feeling the need to copy or imitate Ritchie Blackmore or Morse. For the most part, his playing is very subtle but all the time first class.

'I Can't Win Them All' has a Purple 'Slaves & Masters' era vibe, whilst the atmospheric 'Absence' is absolutely mesmerising with its Rainbow-like keys. The slightly funky 'Wonderful' is a co-write with DP sticks-man Ian Paice and former Rainbow keyboard player Toney Carey, both of whom appear on the album. Indeed, this is the second occasion Paice has contributed to the band's recordings, having played on their 2015 debut 'This Is The Thing'; he has also played live with them which is a great endorsement. The Funkiness continues with 'End Of Pain', which includes a snippet of 'Dancin' In the Streets'. The second half of the album has a couple more up-tempo numbers, 'We Both Go Down' and 'Earth Sand', and heavier mid-paced tracks 'Evil Tongue' and 'Trouble Man'. It concludes with 'No Rest' which has a classic Whitesnake vibe, albeit with Gillan-like vocals!

For fans of DP and Classic Rock in general 'Venus And Volcanus' is definitely worth checking out.
