May well be the most frustrating album I've heard in years, maybe ever.

We all like a little raucous Rock 'n' Roll in our life. After all, who can go wrong with a slice of Guns 'N' Roses Sleaze, a schmooze of Enuff Z'Nuff sunshine or maybe an authentic grind of Tesla grit? The answer to that question would appear to be Gut-Scrapers and their second effort 'Getting Through'. Strangely, the main ingredient is here in abundance; Fred Fages and William Cortier ripping out a series of riffs that suggest ragged riches abound. Yet as soon as this outfit, from Nimes in France, have to do anything other than sit on the spirit of Slash, they careen off the rails.

The otherwise biting and twirling 'Thankful' is brought to a halt through the characterless, heavily-accented vocals of Thierry Pitarch, a singer who rasps and whines through every line, not one of them intelligible. I can't tell you how much I'd rather hear a singer confidently belt out lyrics in their native tongue than mangle and tangle themselves in the unsure mess this all becomes. The title cut genuinely sounds like it could have come from 'Appetite For Destruction', the juggernaut of guitars that knocks you from your feet mighty in the extreme, but when things are slowed down it all becomes so sloppy that you'll need a shovel to scoop it up.

Two songs in and GS have blown two golden opportunities, and so it continues. 'Let The Light' sits on powerful riffs that are undone by leaden drums and wheezing rasps, while the upbeat, threat-carrying 'No Way Back' is quickly relegated from top flight contender to lower league also ran in the space of a few seconds.

Honestly, 'Getting Through' may well be the most frustrating album I've heard in years, maybe ever. Some of the riffs and guitar solos are so damn fine that you'd believe Slash and Izzy Stradlin nipped in to help out when they had a few spare minutes. That nothing else comes even remotely close to that level is enough to make you cry. Gut-Scrapers? More like "gut-wrenchers".
