Let down by a lacklustre, and let's be honest, at times out of tune vocal performance.

Back in the now mist-shrouded days of pre-history (or before mass uptake of the internet for the post-Grunge generation), if a band didn't get signed it usually meant they weren't good enough to release an album on anyone but their closest friends and family. Okay, things went out of kilter a bit in the late eighties when the majors were falling over themselves to sign any old shite on the premise if you slung enough of it some of it would stick, but as a rule of thumb, if labels passed on you then you didn't cut the mustard. There were some remarkable exceptions of course, but as a quality control barometer, it worked more often than not.

A somewhat strange introduction to the fifth album from Germany's Toja (no, never really crossed my radar before either), but by way of explanation, I don't think they would have gotten a deal back in the day, let alone progressed to album number five. A Tad harsh you may think, particularly if I tell you that musically speaking their brand of Sinner meets Pretty Maids Melodic Rock/Metal would normally be up my street, but 'V' is let down by a lacklustre, and let's be honest, at times out of tune vocal performance – he sounds like Bruce Dickinson trying to imitate Roy Khan and failing miserably.

It's a shame really because the brooding 'Love Is Like A Sin', the thumping 'Forever Rock' and Led Zeppelin-flavoured 'Where's My Home' actually demonstrate Toja have, on the whole, grasped the art of decent song-writing, but as soon as the vocals kick it all falls kind of flat... at least to my ears at any rate.

Apparently, this album coincides with their 20th anniversary as a band, good luck with that guys, but until the vocal situation is addressed properly, I fear promotion to the upper echelons will remain tantalisingly just out of reach.
