Another great release from Seether.

I never liked Nirvana, but I do like Seether. For those unfamiliar with the South African trio, comparisons with the Godfathers of the Grunge movement are generally unavoidable. Maybe that means I've matured (unlikely) and am now tolerant to the genre that signalled the death of big Melodic Rock at the beginning of the nineties, or maybe that my tastes have developed and I'm eager to explore more sounds, regardless of image and style.

Seether have been around since the start of the 20th century and 'Poison The Parish' is their sixth (if you count 'Disclaimer' and 'Disclaimer II' as one entity) full-length release. In many ways it's business as usual and that is no bad thing in my book, but there are nuances and modifications, even though they're ever so slight, that sidestep the need to use the word repetition. Shaun Morgan (vocals/guitar), John Humphrey (drums) and Dale Stewart (bass) have been around long enough to appreciate they have a settled fan-base and they're unlikely to win any new listeners. Their previous youthful exuberance seems to have been replaced by a mature acceptance and though still edgy, the in-your-face attitude has been tempered in favour of, dare I say it, something more commercial.

The arrangements and song structures have thought and the hooks are melodic with a Grunge-infused undertone. Morgan's vocals project the right amount of menace but they're more than just angry. The guy can sing and is able to move between subtlety and harshness in the blink of an eye. Apparently he was really pissed off when it came to writing the songs and though lyrically that is apparent, his demeanour has been channelled in a thought provoking way. Opener 'Stoke The Fire' hits the hardest, with some hallmark incendiary qualities and Morgan's vocal delivery is at its most caustic. 'Betray And Degrade' follows and from then on we're in familiar Nirvana-like territory. The music is quite reflective at times, yet still carries enough power to highlight Morgan's bad mood. 'Let You Down' was the first song to be previewed and in many ways it's representative of the album as a whole.

'Poison The Parish' is nicely balanced, with enough variety, despite the lack of an out and out ballad, to maintain the interest levels from 'Stoke...' through to (standard edition) closer 'Sell My Soul'. This is another great release from Seether... but I still don't like Nirvana.
