Nine songs that take you on a history lesson in just over thirty minutes, via good old fashioned Rock 'n' Roll.

The Ghost Town Rebellion hails from Sacramento, California and the title of their second release, 'Urbs Indomita', comes from the motto of their home city which translated from Latin means "The Indomitable City".

The quintet blend together Classic Rock, Folk, Blues, Soul and Southern Rock into the nine songs found here. What we also have is a hometown history lesson and it's therefore no surprise that lyricist Shawn Peter is a history major and a historical tour guide for the city.

Lead off track 'Promontory Bend' is a pure Classic Rock offering about the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, complete with railroad sound effects that bookend the song. 'McClatchy' has a slightly Grungier (Alice In Chains-like) sound to it and details the origins of Sacramento's newspaper which is still owned by the family.

The standout song on this album, for me, is 'The Delta Kings' and it's a foot-tappingly catchy slice of Southern charm; put on your dancing shoes and have a good time heading down river aboard the paddle steamer it's named after. 'Stanford' Rocks out again in an Old West style but is interspersed with banjo, accordion and some fine slide guitar work. As the title suggests, it is about how the well-known university came to be. 'Expressway' is a mid-paced Rock 'n' Roll tune with a Country edge that gives us an insight into the Pony Express which ran in the early 1860s.

The pace slows down a touch with a couple of acoustic tracks, the sort of "sat around the campfire" songs about life, love and personal reflection. The first is an homage to the city of Sacramento and why they live and love their hometown, the second, 'Quieter', is a personal take on a parent's divorce, re-marriage and divorce again.
Lastly, if you are a Folk, Rock or Blues band steeped in Americana, then the name Bruce Springsteen will be on your play-list and they finish things off with a cover of 'I'm On Fire'. They've Rocked it up a bit and whilst it isn't bad, I prefer the sparseness of the original – The Boss wins this one.

In conclusion, what we have here is nine songs that take you on a history lesson in just over thirty minutes, via good old fashioned Rock 'n' Roll with a couple of standout tracks. This would be great on a slab of vinyl – Urbs Indomita, frui musica.
