It is great to see Davy Vain still in top form after all these years.

Vain are back after a gap of four years with this new release which Davy Vain (having started his career as a producer as well as a front-man) has self-produced. He has one of the most recognizable voices in Rock and this new release preserves the original Vain sound just the way the fans like it.

There's has always been something of an Alternative Rock characteristic about Vain records. Davy Vain puts it down to influence from the Haight Ashbury area of San Francisco in the early days of the band. Whatever it is, there is a definite raw sound to the records that reminds of Blondie era American Punk or post-Punk bands like Teardrop Explodes which, in turn, took influences from over here and the birth of Punk with bands like the Sex Pistols. However, with Vain that influence is mixed with shredding guitar which is pure eighties, something that led to the band's strong appeal to the Hair Metal and Sleaze scene.

Opener 'Rolling With The Punches' encapsulates exactly that. One of the things Vain take from Punk is the urgency and the rush to the finish as if every second matters and 'Deliver The Passion' is a good example. There's no slowing down for this guy. The energy of the record is of someone half his age and long may that be the case. 'Long Gone' opens with some Dokken style monster riffing, but it's not long before we're into a Tenpole Tudor style chorus. 'Dark City' and 'Bury Some Pain' reminded me of Siouxsie And The Banshees era Gothic Punk Pop with the electric guitar taking more of a back seat.

'It's A Long Goodbye' adds an effects-laden guitar solo to inject a little bit of Psychedelic Rock into the mix. This leads into 'Inside Out' and 'Don't Let It Happen To You' which offer a seventies-influenced trippy feel with raw guitars and a Rockier vocal. The listener is then carried along into the higher energy 'Sacrifice' and 'Show Your Love' complete with blistering guitar, for fans of the shred, which accompanies that trademark unmistakeable wail.

If you liked Vain's marriage of Rock/Punk/Alternative and Davy Vain's unique voice first time around, the main thing to know about 'Rolling With The Punches' is that you won't be disappointed. It is great to see Davy Vain still in top form after all these years!
