Steel Panther / Wayward Sons - The Academy, Dublin (Ireland) - 18 January 2018

There's not many who'd deny former Little Angels main man Toby Jepson another shot at the big time and with Wayward Sons he stands a bloody good chance. Their debut album 'Ghosts Of Yet To Come' was one of the most talked about Rock releases of last year and rightly so; in the live domain they're a pretty formidable force too.

At 7 30pm sharp Johnny Cash's 'Folsom Prison Blues' blared out of the PA and they kick started the set with an energetic but very muffled 'Alive'. Thankfully the sound balanced out a lot better on 'Ghosts Of Yet To Come' as some late comers started to arrive just in time to see the band get into their stride. There was quite a few in the crowd who probably weren't born when Jepson was flying high with Little Angels, but he properly introduced himself in style with a pulsating ' Don't Wanna Go' which got a load of curious heads nodding vigorously.

As expected, a glass was raised to Motorhead legend and Jepson's former Fastway bandmate, the late "Fast" Eddie Clarke, a gesture that seemed to send the band up another gear as they closed the set in a blaze of glory with 'Be Still' and the hefty 'Until The End'. For a relatively new band, these guys have an infectious chemistry that flows out every time they spark up a tune. Even without keyboardist Dave Kemp, who was missing due to a family bereavement, they still rammed home a bruising set. Guitarist Sam Wood churned out the licks with all the style of a young Scott Gorham, Nic Wastell battered his bass like a man possessed and Phil Martini was a powerhouse behind his kit, and also got the biggest cheer from the ladies. As for Jepson, well he's a dab hand at this Rock 'n' Roll lark and maturing very nicely.

Steel Panther - Live 2

If there were any punters in need of a jolt to kick start they're year, then what better way is there than a night getting doused in the saucy shenanigans of California's Steel Panther. This was not a night for man-hating prudes or devout practitioners of political correctness. This was a riotous celebration of sleaze-laden, spandex-bursting, cock-wielding Rock. Keeping in mind that weekends in Ireland start on Thursdays, this rowdy gathering of beer-fuelled Dubliners were hellbent on a party and the dirtier the better – and that's exactly what they got. The blaring of the Kiss classic 'I Love It Loud' had the desired effect and got the sold-out crowd roaring in unison like a Celtic Metal choir... but apparently, they weren't loud enough. After the 'Steel Motherfuckin' Panther' intro tape, guitarist Satchel took to the stage and demanded a louder reception. Take two and the roof was royally raised and LA's rudest and crudest tore into 'Supersonic Sex Machine' followed by 'Tomorrow Night'.

After a good ten minutes of smut-strewn banter that would've made Roy "Chubby" Brown blush, the Oriental chords of 'Asian Hooker' got the Panther disciples bouncing and brought about the first crowd surfer of the evening to which lead screamer Michael Starr roared "you crazy Irish fucker". As they were promoting new album 'Lower The Bar', their new material was inevitably road-tested. 'Goin' In The Backdoor', 'Poontang Boomerang' and 'Wasted Too Much Time' were all enthusiastically lapped up. However, it was their take on arena power balladry 'That's When You Came In' that topped the lot. Starr instructed the crowd to "get them lighters in the air" and for a few minutes fans young and old brought back a pure eighties Rock vibe.

Steel Panther - Live 3

Starr and Satchel carried on hurling the unrepeatables at each other and Lexxi Foxx continued to hold his pout and hilariously preen himself between songs. From here on in Panther went into overdrive. '17 Girls In A Row' brought a throng of willing Metal maidens to the stage to indulge in some man handling that carried on well into one of their "tame" songs 'Gloryhole'. Anarchy ensued with 'Death To All But Metal' after Satchel admitting he'd love to kick Justin Bieber in the balls. There was only one song that was going to close the set, 'Party All Day' rocked The Academy to its foundations with almost the entire crowd and probably the bar staff jumping like certified lunatics. A memorable end to an adrenalising evening's entertainment.

Steel Panther - Live 4

Many think that Steel Panther have well overstayed their welcome and the joke has gone seriously stale. However, this gig sold out in a matter of minutes and I'm pretty sure the majority went home smiling from ear to ear after having the night of their lives. You can't ask for more than that. Long live Steel Panther.
