A decent, short-but-sweet Southern-styled listen.

Honeyjack; it's a name that conjures up thoughts of one of the flavour variations of my favourite tipple, from a certain popular distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Ah, Mr Daniel, I salute you.

What was intended as a solo project for Arkansas-based singer/song-writer Mark Summerlin, having previously worked with Seal and producer David Foster, grew into a duo when acclaimed session guitarist TJ Scarlett was bought in. Rounding out their sound with a band of local seasoned musos, they perform regular live shows throughout Arkansas and have also opened for Styx. '8 Track' is their debut album and it's not just dedicated to the magnetic tape of the seventies, the decade that has largely influenced the Honeyjack sound, there are actually eight tracks on the album. At just over thirty minutes, it barely qualifies for a full album review in our New Releases section.

With a sound that's unquestionably Southern Rock, which occasionally slips into out-and-out Country territory, it's nevertheless very guitar-orientated. Scarlett's solos and licks bear a fluidity that brings to mind Keith Urban, indeed, the groove of the toe-tappin' album opener 'Just Wired That Way' is very reminiscent of Mr. Nicole Kidman in his prime. There's a lot of this album, such as the Pop-tinged melodies and vocal harmonies, that remind me of the Canadian duo Cherry Suede, particularly 'Hated Being Right About You' and the ballad 'Show You Arkansas', while the moody 'Outcast' veers into Lynyrd Skynyrd territory and 'Please Come Back' throws a little Eagles into the mix – though more of a Randy Meisner composition than one of the Don Henley/Glenn Frey collaborations.

'I'm Not Your Man' and 'Know How To Pick 'Em' may be too Country for some tastes, but otherwise, it's a decent, short-but-sweet Southern-styled listen.
