Jag Panzer - 'The Deviant Chord'

This is massive sounding and very bombastic, just as it should be.

I remember stating in a review of 2004's 'Casting The Stones' that Judas Priest should be checking their wing mirrors; that album seemed so Classic Metal and so very vibrant. The US band, recently thought of as Power Metal, have been more than that but this first album since their second hiatus – following 2011's 'The Scourge Of The Light' – is very Power Metal, and that has its pluses and minuses.

Make no mistake, this is massive sounding and very bombastic, just as it should be. As soon as we kick off with 'Born Of The Flame', the double kick drums, Celtic-infused melodies and a hard-charging solo show us we're in good hands, Harry "The Tyrant" Conklin's warmer, perhaps more Hard Rock vocals are the grit in the pearl. 'Far Beyond All Fear' showcases doubled Iron Maiden-like guitars and an escalating middle. Jag Panzer then add to that with the violin and piano of the weighty 'Long Awaited Kiss', the epitome of a Metal ballad and surely Power fans will be sated.

Fireworks - The Ultimate Magazine For Melodic Rock Music

However, those who don't crave that feel have a smudge of Hard Rock heaven to hold onto, 'Salacious Behavior' has more swing to it and 'Fire Of Our Spirit' has that Fire...with... Wind in its powerful but melodic push, an exciting race with some entertaining tussles.

Naysayers may worry that Jag Panzer are breaking no new ground, but they are so good at what they do that the old ground they take us to is a damned good day out.
