Power Metal the way it should be and definitely a real return to form.

Seven albums in, and it's unlikely that there's many of you out there who are not aware of what Dragonforce are all about, especially if you've tried to master 'Through The Fire And Flames' on 'Guitar Hero'. One thing is for sure, 'Reaching Into Infinity' is a release that will delight existing fans, and resolutely annoy those that just don't see the appeal. Luckily I'm one of the former, and I love it.

The album kicks off with a short mood-setting intro before things go exceptionally Dragonforce(y) with 'Ashes Of The Dawn'. It's four and a half minutes of exactly what I was hoping for, at least once the main riff kicks in at thirty seconds anyway. The chorus is reminiscent of their '...Flames' classic, and even though the song doesn't quite scale those heights, it's a belter of an opener.

Throughout the ten tracks it's no surprise that the twin guitars of Herman Li and Sam Totman are given a severe workout, with the usual masterful shredding never taking over a song any more than is necessary. I think this is a big part of what I like about this band, as the songs are all very well balanced and constructed, with keyboards and guitars given equal billing where possible. Second song 'Judgement Day' has some stunning work from all concerned, while 'Land Of Shattered Dreams' will have budding air guitarists feeling like their fingers are about to fall off.

Fireworks - The Ultimate Magazine For Melodic Rock Music

It's not all "that Dragonforce sound" however, as the boys experiment a little on a few songs. 'WAR!' marries old-school Thrash with new-school force to great effect, whereas 'Silence' is a really good power ballad without a shred in sight. The most ambitious number is the eleven minute 'The Edge Of The World', and though I appreciate the effort, it doesn't do too much for me as it never really gets going; it also has some unattractive Death grunting in the middle.

Dragonforce have certainly done a great job overall with this album, their first studio effort to actually feature a dragon on the cover (about time, chaps). Marc Hudson holds everything together with his powerful, clear vocals, and there's melody aplenty rammed down the listener's throat. 'Reaching Into Infinity' is Power Metal the way it should be and definitely a real return to form; absolutely not for wimps!
