Definitely a slow-burner, but once 'Ignited', you will be hooked.

When our Reviews Editor sent me a file to review with the name Reece, I immediately jumped to the wrong conclusion and thought that it was going to be a new solo venture from erstwhile Accept, Sainted Sinners and Bangalore Choir vocalist David Reece. However, it transpired that the Reece in question are, in fact, a Rock trio from Caerphilly, South Wales, and take their name from bassist and vocalist Rob Reece; the rest of the band consists of Jon Davies (guitars & backing vocals) and Russ Rogers (drums & percussion).

My, aforementioned, preconceived ideas of what I thought the album might sound like meant that I was completely underwhelmed by my first listen of 'Ignited'. However, several listens later, I am happy to report that Reece have released an excellent modern sounding Rock album.

'Ignited' is the band's first full-length album and follows the release of their 'Noisebox' EP. The ten original songs are well written and although influences can be heard throughout, Reece have managed to produce their own unique sound. The star of the show, to my ears at least, is the fantastic guitar playing of Davies who has managed to inject some fine solos throughout without simply resorting to playing a million notes per second.

Opening track 'Save Us' has a Newman meets Muse vibe, while the punchy 'Falling Down' highlights the melancholic cadence to Reece's vocals, albeit they are still very alluring to the listener; when combined with Davies' vocals on the excellent 'Painless' they work extremely well. I can hear influences from The Police in 'Hold On' but still very modern in its composition.

The second half of the album is, in my humble opinion, stronger than the first. 'Lost in Translation', an acoustic ballad which should, by all accounts, highlight the fragility in Reece's vocals, however, contrarily it works very well. The title track 'Ignited' exemplifies Davies solicitous guitar playing and 'Meltdown' has a Matchbox Twenty vibe, whereas 'Out Of Nowhere' brings to mind fellow Welsh band Manic Street Preachers. Reece leave the best for the end with the extremely hypnotic 'Wasteland'.

This is definitely a slow-burner, but once 'Ignited', you will be hooked.
