There's potential here, and it's worth investigating if you're swayed by a more modern Prog approach.

A Progressive Rock band from Parma, Italy (I'll resist any ham jokes) who are not what you might expect. There's no sign of the Classical bombast of other Italian bands like Rhapsody Of Fire, Luca Turilli's Rhapsody or Labyrinth. Instead, they mix heavy, Modern Metal with electronic music and melody to bring something new to the table. They've put out a couple of EPs, but this is their first full-length album.

Everything is infused with an electronic undercurrent, which replaces the more traditional sounding keyboard you hear on so many Progressive Rock albums. In essence, while it's similar in approach to most modern Prog Metal albums, with keys and guitars battling it out for attention, the sound of Electronica gives it a fresher sheen.

Leonardo Freggi's guitars provide huge slabs of riffage, with the drums and bass working in unison to give jaw shuddering blast beats. There's melody provided with some decent hooks, with the likes of 'Fading Out', 'Burst Inside' and 'Open Your Eyes', which are tracks that keep the tempo and time changes varied. The lyrics are introspective, about internal strife and the difficulties of fitting into a complex world where the line between what's real and what isn't becomes increasingly more blurred.

So far so good, but William Verderi's vocals, while okay, are hard to follow at times, and the melodies a lot of the time need more punch to help them rise above the impressive technicality of the music. The production is very solid, as you would expect from DGM's Simone Mularoni, but the band could take a leaf out of DGM's book, in terms of how to balance power and melody in equal measure.

There's potential here, and it's worth investigating if you're swayed by a more modern Prog approach.
