Aeraco is definitely a name to keep an eye on going forward.

With one foot planted unashamedly in the eighties, Chicago-based Melodic Metal quartet Aeraco return to the fray with their sophomore album 'Baptized By Fire'. Released two years ago, their debut offering, 'All Or Nothing', won plenty of plaudits locally, and even began to forge a solid reputation further afield, but with this second effort, the stakes are raised considerably.

Proffering an oft-brutal yet surprisingly melody-conscious cauldron of caustic riffs, gravelly vocals and searing solos, their twin guitar attack isn't dissimilar to that of Teutonic demi-gods Accept on occasion – check out the scything 'Back With Vengeance' and you'll see exactly what I mean – yet on others it strays into prime-time US Arena Rock as found on 'Tequila And Lime' or classic Iron Maiden as can be heard on 'The Outlaw' or 'Cum To Rock'. Then there's the title track itself which has the kind of attitude and attack that once made Skid Row a force to be reckoned with. Throw in the odd nod towards newer acts like Avenged Sevenfold, and a dash of heyday Metallica and the picture starts to make some semblance of sense.

Whilst on paper it doesn't seem to stack up particularly neatly, however, when you actually play the thirteen tracks that make up the album back to back, it flows surprisingly well, nay, exceedingly bloody well! The production is crisp, the delivery right on the money (the twin guitars especially) and for a band whose roots are obviously tapped into Metal, their innate ability to pen memorable hooks and refrains is actually quite exhilarating to behold.

There's a school of thought that would suggest Aeraco are still searching for the direction that defines them as a band. I can certainly see the merits in that argument, but honestly, if they can keep up the quality of divergent material like the rumbling 'Stab In Dim Light' or the reflective ballad 'All I Know', why on earth would you possibly want to tie them down to one particular sound or style?

Aeraco is definitely a name to keep an eye on going forward...
