Even though it is not the same as in the "old days", it is still great to hear these tunes.

The announcement a couple of years ago that Ritchie Blackmore would be "reforming" Rainbow quite rightly elicited a great deal of excitement in all the Deep Purple, Rainbow and Ritchie Blackmore fans. I commented at the time of the Birmingham show that given the reception that the band received, I would be very surprised if Blackmore did not come out and do this again... and we all know what happened there.

Having been at this show in Birmingham, I was intrigued to see if the recording matched my memory of the concert. Had it been overdubbed, changed or altered in any way to make it sound better? I remember thinking at the time that visually Blackmore was not as mobile as he used to be, which is fair enough as, with all of us, he has grown older. I also noted that the faster and more complicated lead lines tended to be played by the keyboard player rather than Blackmore himself. I am pleased to say, to my ears at least, the recording does not appear to have been doctored or "enhanced" as far as I can tell.

I do also believe that nothing has been left out so the whole set is on here. If you already have the DVD of the German show from 2016, this includes 'Soldier Of Fortune' and 'Burn' which the DVD does not. The booklet doesn't have any information, other than the track listing and the list of band members, and is mostly just photographs from the concert. It does mention that the two-disc set is a soundboard recording, so you do hear the odd note here and there, but this is no deterrent and, truth be told, sounds a little more authentic and gritty.

What else can I say about it? If you were there then no doubt you will want a lasting reminder of the event. If you weren't, then you will probably want to hear what you missed. Even though it is not the same as in the "old days", it is still great to hear these tunes. Irrespective, Blackmore will always be a major influence on the type of music I will listen to and will always be my guitar hero.
