This is British AOR/Hard Rock done just right.

To all intents and purposes, this new Iconic Eye album is somewhat of a rebirth for the band, with only chief song-writer and guitarist Greg Dean left from the original line-up. Some time back, the band took the major decision to go down the female-fronted route and they also added a young guitar gunslinger which has beefed up their sound considerably. Before all the changes, Iconic Eye were already a formidable force to be reckoned with, but that's been turned up a notch with this new release. Containing a mixture of re-worked tunes from their 'Hidden In Plain Sight' debut and a handful of new songs, the band have really hit the ground running.

Vocalist Jane Gould adds a whole new dimension to the sound and seems really at home with the material, and with young guitarist Robin Mitchard bringing some real flash and thunder to proceedings, this album is a solid slab of British AOR/Hard Rock.

From the off, it's obvious that Iconic Eye are now a very different act to what's gone before, the sound is infinitely tougher and the presence of Gould really takes it all up a notch. Opener 'Am I The One' is a prime slice of muscular Hard Rock and 'Those Tears Won't Last' continues along the same theme with a great hook and full-on sound. 'Black Country Lady' is a real diamond of a song, a ballad that has an "epic" feel to it – a slow build up before exploding with a cracking Mitchard solo... it's my album highlight.

'Black Heart' is also a sturdy piece with a cool arrangement, while 'Thanks For The Memories' is something straight out of the early eighties AOR scene and is a fine piece of writing from Dean. 'Never Get Through The Night' closes the album in fine fashion, it's a neat rocking tune that ticks all the boxes.

Having dealt with the new songs, the remainder is made up of re-imagined cuts from the aforementioned debut. Tracks like 'All She Needed' and 'Let It Rain Down' in particular benefit from having a female lead vocal, but in truth getting Gould on board was a more than sound move all round.

In summary, a top-notch album from this Midlands-based band that with the right breaks could/should make that breakthrough. An upcoming support slot in early 2018 with Magnum should raise their profile nicely; this is British AOR/Hard Rock done just right.
