Nothing ground-breaking here but the band show promise and album number five could be the one.

German band Alpha Tiger have been around for six years now and were formed out of the ashes of Satin Black. Having toured with Sepultura, Gamma Ray and Queensrÿche to name but a few, they were building up a pretty decent following. They garnered critical success with their third release 'Identity' in 2015, however, just before they were due to go out on tour, vocalist Stephan "Heiko" Dietrich left the band.

Luckily for the Germans, they managed to recruit Benjamin Jaino in time for the support slot on Battle Beast's European tour. Jaino slotted right in and after playing fifty odd shows, guitarist and the band's main song-writer Peter Langforth realised what kind of songs would suit their new lead singer. So, fast forward two years and the Germans have recorded their fourth album entitled 'Alpha Tiger'. A new beginning perhaps?

The band wear their hearts on their sleeves and are hugely influenced by Iron Maiden. The album begins with the atmospheric instrumental 'Road To Vega' which slowly builds up before the twin guitars kick in and is very reminiscent of many Maiden songs. 'Comatose' explodes out of the speakers with pounding drums courtesy of David Schleif and the twin guitars of Langforth and Alexander Backasch are at the fore – together they create quite a noise! 'Feather In The Wind' has more of a Classic Rock feel to it and Jaino tries to add a Bluesy vocal to the song. Although he has a decent voice and can hit the high notes with ease, the only slight issue I have is that, at times, he sings with quite a strong accent; it's only a minor complaint though.

'Aurora' is an interesting song underpinned by a Hammond Organ, it reminds me of many songs from the seventies, and one in particular which is on the tip of my tongue... damn, it's gone! The song also features a cracking Queensrÿche-esque guitar solo. 'Welcome To Devil's Town' is another that has more of a Classic Rock vibe to it, and towards the end, acoustic guitars give the song a slight change in pace with a Spanish flavour. The Hammond is prominent once again during 'My Dear Old Friend' which is a mixture of classic seventies meets nineties Maiden.

With repeated plays 'Alpha Tiger' has grown on me – nothing ground-breaking here but the band show promise and album number five could be the one!
