Will not set the world on fire but I’m guessing it should satisfy Headcharger’s existing fan base.

This Modern/Alt Rock five-piece originate from France (around Caen) and were formed in 2004. They are a new name to me so I was somewhat surprised to learn that 'Hexagram' is the band's sixth full-length release. They have toured with the likes of Alice Cooper, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Megadeth and Iron Maiden, and have played at several high-profile festivals during the last few years.

The current line-up, featuring Sébastien Pierre (vocals), David Rocha (guitar), Antony Josse (guitar), Romain Neveu (bass) and Rudy Lerocq (drums), has created an album that should appeal to those with a taste for Stoner or Retro Rock, though essentially the overall sound sticks to the classic guitar/bass/drums/vocals formula. The music incorporates elements of Clutch, Seether and Volbeat, and big riffs are the meat and potatoes of the song structures with the drums pushed forward nicely in the mix. The lyrical (occasionally clumsy) themes are quite dark and introspective, and the accompanying bio states that the album is essentially a journey of split personality, separation, manipulation and conflict, alongside the presence of a loved one long gone... heavy stuff indeed!

It's not all doom and gloom however, as the more vibrant numbers such as 'The One You Want To Be' and 'Load The Dice' make quite an impact due to their commercial edge and drive. The vocals are not harsh and they imbue the material with a sombre tone, however, I would have preferred a greater dynamic to give the songs more identity because the arrangements vary very little from track to track, although closer 'Feed Our Illusions' contains some interesting progressions.

'Hexagram' will not set the world on fire but I'm guessing it should satisfy Headcharger's existing fan base. The band will be promoting this release with several festival appearances during 2017*, including Bloodstock and Sonisphere, and I have a feeling they could be a different proposition in a live environment.
