As a long-standing Babylon fan, I am somewhat disappointed that this isn't the monster that it could have been.

Yet another release by a band that has waited an inordinate amount of time between albums, this time a mere seventeen years since 2000's God awful 'American Blitzkrieg'. Nothing seems to work quickly in Babylon land, particularly regarding new material, and even on that front, 'Revelation Highway' isn't exactly what it seems despite it containing ten songs. Back in early 2017, Babylon A.D. announced that long time guitarist Danny De La Rosa had left following his twenty-eight year tenure. His replacement was to be none other than former Persuaders (The Persuaders being the band's original name from 1986 to 1988) and original Babylon guitarist John Matthews. It's a full circle reunion of The Persuaders which sees a new release that includes the re-recording of four cuts that can be found on the 2006 album 'In The Beginning... Persuaders Recordings 86-88'.

Therefore, of the ten tracks featured on 'Revelation Highway', four have already been previously available as demos which I suspect many diehard fans will already have in their collection. In saying that, finally having professionally recorded and produced versions of these four tracks is nothing but a good thing. This is particularly true of 'Tears' which has more in common with mid to late eighties Danger Danger than the heavier route Babylon took with their studio albums.

The remaining three "original" tracks are 'Last Time For Love', 'She Likes To Give It' and 'I'm No Good For You'. Of the new songs, the single 'Crash And Burn' finds the band in hard rocking mood, while 'Rags To Riches' is old-school Babylon with Derek Davis' voice ever familiar, although there's a clearer, more modern edge to it.

This is a solid album with a few above-average peaks in quality, but sadly, mainly due to the presence of the older tracks, the production is thin which detracts from the overall enjoyment of the album. As a long-standing Babylon fan, I am somewhat disappointed that this isn't the monster that it could have been. However, it's a positive thing to see Babylon A.D. back in the saddle so to speak, and hopefully the band will use this as a stepping stone to delivering a much better album next time out. 'Revelation Highway' fails to hit the watermark created by the self-titled debut and 'Nothing Sacred', but it does have some well above average moments that are worth checking out.
