Instanzia - 'Ghosts'

If you want a bit of high energy melodic power metal that has scope, personality and passion, you really should check out Instanzia.

Power metal is just like every other form of rock music, in that there are plenty of bands out there who, despite obvious musical talent, lack the spark of creativity that sets them apart from the pack. Perhaps the best example of recent years would have to be Dragonforce, and after several spins of 'Ghosts', I would tentatively like to add Instanzia to the list.

Often, when a band starts an album with an instrumental intro, I have an overwhelming urge to skip past it, as it's usually pompous, dull noise. Instanzia's short 'Omen' piece is more like the intro to an epic film, an interesting piece that doesn't overstay it's welcome and sets you up for the album proper. There's only seven more tracks, but they push past 40 minutes so it's not a problem. 'Ghosts Of The Past' rattles along at a good pace, introducing the band's style very well. Instanzia may like to pull off intricate guitar widdles, but importantly they also know the value of a good keyboard, and terrific melodies. I have to say that I really love the guitar sound on the album, as it's really upbeat and exciting, and as a whole the band have produced a very well balanced sound, which, combined with Peter In de Betou's mastering, sounds as good as anything I've heard before. Another plus point is the beautiful cover art by Jean-Pascal Fournier, if that sort of thing matters to you.

It's not all perfect, as sometimes the lyrics can seem a little forced and clunky ('The Desert Fox' springs to mind), and Alexis Woodbury's voice is good rather than great, but they are small niggles that don't spoil any real enjoyment of the album. It's more subtle than Dragonforce or Helloween, but no less captivating, and no less powerful. If you want a bit of high energy melodic power metal that has scope, personality and passion, you really should check out Instanzia.
