Europe - 'Live At Sweden Rock - 30th Anniversary Show'

Extraordinary musicians, great songs and amazing footage.

With an acutely self-explanatory title, the Swedish multi-million pound sellers present a magnificent summary of their career: 28 songs chosen from their three decades as a band. The setting couldn't have been more suitable as their homeland embraces them with an audience of 30,000 fans from all over the world.

The DVD's intro feels grand as regards both sound and imagery, and the 14 superbly positioned cameras capture the splendour of the band's energy in a live environment and the always positive response from their loyal fans. As they kick off with 'Riches To Rags', from their latest album 'Bag Of Bones', and continue with a best of set-list, there is never a dull moment with songs from so many different eras and of different tempos and moods, and views from so many different angles. 'Not Supposed To Sing The Blues', 'Scream Of Anger', 'Superstitious', 'Sign Of The Times', 'Start From The Dark', 'Wings Of Tomorrow', 'Carrie', 'Rock The Night' and 'Last Look At Eden' are all there, and to bring more dynamics to the mix, 'Drink And A Smile' and 'Open Your Heart' are performed acoustically with all band members sitting at the front of the stage. And if there is one song that could not by any means be left out, notably the one that brought Europe to international fame, it is 'The Final Countdown', ending in true splendour the live show disc.

In addition, on this same disc, we are treated to two covers by two bands that have inspired and influenced Europe from their inception: Thin Lizzy's 'Jailbreak' and UFO's 'Lights Out', with Scott Gorham and Michael Schenker, respectively, joining on stage as special guests. Certainly not an everyday occurrence.

The package is completed with a bonus disc (unavailable at the time of writing) with interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, including guitarist John Norum jamming with the two aforementioned icons.

Once again, the Scandinavians give testament to their being at the top of their league, with a clear yet organic sound, display on this celebratory DVD their triumphs as a group. You can even feel the camaraderie and friendship amongst them as singer Joey Tempest brings drummer Ian Haugland, bassist Jon Leven, guitarist John Norum and keyboardist Mic Micaeli to the front of the catwalk one at a time throughout the set to introduce them to the audience and have all 60,000 eyes on them.

Extraordinary musicians, great songs and amazing footage.
