The Dukes Of September - 'Live At The Lincoln Center'

Concert featuring Michael McDonald, Donald Fagen and Boz Scaggs.

This live DVD brings together three of the most respected Rock and Soul performers, Michael McDonald (Doobie Brothers) Donald Fagen (Steely Dan), and Boz Scaggs (Steve Miller Band). All three artists have forged successful solo careers, with McDonald working with Fagan as a session player during many of the Steely Dan recordings.

This show unites the players under the title of ‘The Dukes Of September’, with a superb backing band and a huge catalogue of music. This is a real treat for fans of the whole Jazz Rock, West Coast sound.

Recorded live at the Lincoln Centre of Performing Arts in New York, the setting is both auspicious and grand. Proceedings begin with an energetic version of ‘People Get Up And Drive Your Funky Soul’ by the late James Brown, whilst a super-smooth version of the Isley Brothers’ ‘Who’s That Lady’ really hits the mark.

All three performers share the same stage throughout the show - McDonald behind his keyboard and Scaggs on guitar - with only Fagan straying out from behind his piano to occupy centre stage during a wonderful version of Steely Dan’s ‘Peg’.

The classics are all delivered in impeccable style. Guitarist Jon Herington is worthy of a special mention for some impressively fluid guitar work throughout the show.

‘Kid Charlemagne’, ‘Reeling In The Years’, and ‘Keep Forgetting’ are just some of the gems on offer and the level of musicianship displayed here is astounding. The camera really captures the class of the night and the laid back mood.

The only negative if I have to find one - they never brought the tour to Europe!
