Gizmodrome

Gizmodrome - Scala, London (UK) - 07 March 2018

Gizmodrome are an unlikely super-group (if you will) that consists of former Police drummer Stewart Copeland, Mark King of Level 42, Adrian Belew, who had stints with Frank Zappa and David Bowie, plus keyboard player Vittorio Cosma.

This is the band's first tour since forming in 2017, and the venue is well attended with much anticipation in the air regarding whether the band could pull it off in the live arena. The album itself is a mixture of Prog Rock with a Funk edge all wrapped up in some quirky lyrical content.

Bounding onto the stage, Copeland is all smiles as he jumps behind his Tama drum kit for opening number 'Zombies In The Mall', though trying to sing and play drums certainly looks like it is testing him somewhat. The set is littered with obscure Police songs that Copeland had a hand in writing, including 'Darkness', 'Miss Gradenko' and the highlight 'Does Everyone Stare' sung by King.

This is my first time seeing King perform live and I am quite blown away by his abilities on bass guitar, while the interplay between himself and Copeland on drums is a highlight throughout the show. Belew I had seen once before when he toured with Bowie and on that occasion, he put on a super professional performance, tonight he looks more relaxed and truly looks like he is having the time of his life on stage, his guitar work was precise yet off the wall when needed on songs such as 'I Know Too Much'.

Copeland swaps from drums to guitar with another musician covering him behind the kit as he takes centre stage and vocals for future classics like 'Stay Ready' and 'Summers Coming', as well as the old Police chestnut 'Bombs Away', although it did miss Sting's vocals on this one! Copeland truly relishes being stage front and never stops interacting with the audience and band throughout the show, I would have liked a few more songs from his period as Klark Kent though I thought the set was well put together. Let us hope this band can find a way to continue recording and performing around their individual schedules as they are one of the most exciting bands I have seen for some time.
