Adrenalize - 'Adrenalize'

An uninspiring pack.

Discovering superb acts/artists that you're previously unfamiliar with is one of the true pleasures of being a reviewer. Pretty Wild, Kissin' Dynamite and Hartmann have all come into my sights this way. Adrenalize, on the strength of their eponymous debut, won't, for now, be joining that list...

Opener 'Rock 'n' Roll' is stodgier than a giant pretzel. Imagine a German Saxon, complete with an accented Biff Byford sound-alike, and you're pretty much there. Unimaginative lyrics, weak backing vocals, and a decidedly pedestrian pace make it seem longer than five minutes. So, discovering that second track 'Breakout' is cut from the same cloth is disheartening.

'Ship Of Fools' maintains the NWOBHM flavour; its generic chugging is at least overlaid by more imaginative harmonised lead guitar playing, though a flat production does the material no favours. The eighties Rock semi-ballad stylings of 'With You' suits vocalist Andreas Ellner's voice far better than what's gone before, while the more mature lyrics are refreshing compared to Adrenalize's usual recycled Rock clichés – it's certainly the pick of what is ultimately an uninspiring pack.

Unkindness is never intended; being a conduit between record and reader is always the aim, tough, like closing number 'Bitter Pill' – though it may be for this quartet to swallow.
