Rob Moratti - 'Renaissance'

Moratti knows what he's doing, and he delivers beautifully on this release.

The man many will define as the other voice of Saga is back again and that shows something; he could have thought "that's my shot", but he was around before that and he'll be around after. It's a testament to him and this new album is a rather fine piece of his eventual legacy.

It's pretty standard US Hard AOR to start. 'You Are The One' showcases Moratti's eighties vocal tone nicely before the chorus leaps up a notch and so does his athletic voice. 'Best Of Me' is a huge REO Speedwagon-patterned ballad, while the bubbling 'It's Time To Let Go' is an eighties chart-nestler that's bright and shiny with wonderful synth parps. Elsewhere, they opt to keep those doubled guitars reined in for 'Lift You Up'.

Of course, this AOR can be ordinary, like the sunny 'Let You In' or 'Mandy Come Home' which is a conveyor belt bouncy rocker, but this is a tiny grouse akin to a spatchcock... or something like that. There's also some cleverness too, that eighties sound is all around us at the moment in both Pop and AOR; look at Fortune, look at A-ha (come away now, that's enough...)

Moratti knows what he's doing, and he delivers beautifully on this release. Saga may well be no more, but Rob Moratti motors on.
